What are the limitations of gas detection tubes?

Single Gas Detection: Each tube is designed to detect a specific gas or a narrow range of gases. If multiple gases need to be monitored simultaneously, multiple tubes or different detection methods may be required.


Accuracy: Gas detection tubes provide semi-quantitative results based on color changes or length of stain. The accuracy is typically within a specified range (e.g., ±25% of the reading). For precise quantitative measurements, other types of gas detectors or analytical instruments may be necessary.

Limited Range: Some gases may have detection limits that are not suitable for very low concentrations or high concentrations outside the tube's measurement range. Users need to select tubes appropriate for the expected concentration levels of the gas being monitored.

Cross-Sensitivity: Gas detection tubes can exhibit cross-sensitivity to other gases present in the environment. This can lead to inaccurate readings if interfering gases are present in significant concentrations.

Temperature and Humidity Sensitivity: The performance of gas detection tubes can be affected by temperature and humidity conditions. Extreme temperatures or high humidity levels may impact the accuracy of the results.

Response Time: While gas detection tubes provide quick results compared to sending samples to a laboratory, they still require a specific sampling period (usually a few minutes) to collect an adequate volume of air. This may not be suitable for situations requiring instantaneous gas level readings.

Storage and Shelf Life: Tubes have a limited shelf life and must be stored properly to maintain their effectiveness. Exposure to heat, light, or humidity can degrade the reagents inside the tubes, affecting their accuracy.

Cost per Measurement: While gas detection tubes are generally affordable for single-use measurements, the cost per measurement can add up compared to continuous monitoring methods over time.

Operator Skill: Although relatively easy to use, proper training is necessary to ensure correct sampling techniques and accurate interpretation of results. Improper sampling or reading techniques can lead to erroneous readings.

Despite the many limitations of the gas detection tube, the quick detection function of the gas detection tube is useful for many industries as long as  it is used according to the instructions.
