Portable Gas Detector Sensor Construction

Electrochemical sensor has two or three electrodes in contact with the electrolyte, and occasionally four electrodes. The typical electrodes are composed of a large surface area noble metal and a porous hydrophobic membrane. The electrodes and electrolyte are in contact with the surrounding air and are monitored by the porous membrane. Mineral acids are generally used as electrolytes. However, some sensors also use organic electrolytes. The electrodes are generally placed in a plastic box with gas inlet holes and electrical contacts.
